Licensing overview of Windows Server 2016 Standard & Datacenter edition
Datacenter and Standard edition licensing transitioned from being processor-based to being core-based.
For both Windows Server 2016 Standard and Datacenter editions, the number of core licenses required equals the number of physical cores on the licensed server, subject to a minimum of 8 core licenses per physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licenses per server. Core licenses are sold in 2-packs and 16-packs. Licensing model includes both Cores + Client Access Licenses (CALs). Each user and/or device accessing a licensed Windows Server Standard, Datacenter, or Multipoint edition requires a Windows Server CAL or Remote Desktop Services CAL.
All physical cores on the server must be licensed, subject to a minimum of 8 core licenses per physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licenses per server.
Essentials edition server is for either one or two processor servers.
Standard edition permits use of one running instance of the server software in the physical OSE on the licensed server (in addition to two virtual OSEs), if the physical OSE is used solely to host and manage the virtual OSEs.
Essentials edition permits use of one running instance of the server software in the physical OSE on the licensed server (in addition to one virtual OSE), if the physical OSE is used solely to host and manage the virtual OSE.
How to Convert Windows Server 2016 Evaluation version to Retail/Paid version for business?
Not applicable for brand new server installation, so simply skip it. You only need this help if you are using an evaluation version of Windows Server 2016 on a Virtual Machine with Firewall/port locked/DMZ and retracted environment and now you need to active the server as licensed and legal for business usages.
You can freely convert between Windows Server 2016 Evaluation version to Retail/Volume/OEM Licensed version. The edition remains the same during this conversion. If you are starting with an evaluation version, convert it to the retail version first, and then you can inter-convert as described. To do this, from an elevated command prompt, run:
slmgr /ipk <key>
Where <key> is the appropriate volume, retail, or OEM product/license key.
Open PowerShell/Command Prompt as Administrator and write and enter: slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
After inserting the license key successfully, write this command for activation: slmgr /ato
If you get an error something like: Error: 0xC004F069 or Error 1168 the specified product key could not be validated, You need a Retail product key (which you will get if purchased from us) and use DISM command to upgrade Edition from evaluation edition to Standard (or Datacenter) edition.
