Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop Services - 50 rds cals

Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop Services CAL

Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop Service - enables users to access session-based desktops, virtual machine-based desktops, or applications in the data center from both within a corporate network and from the Internet. Remote Desktop Services helps to securely connect remote users from managed or undamaged devices. When a user or a device connects to an RD Session Host server, the RD Session Host server determines if an RDS CAL is needed. The RD Session Host server then requests an RDS CAL from the Remote Desktop license server. If an appropriate RDS CAL is available from a license server, the RDS CAL is issued to the client, and the client is able to connect to the RD Session Host server and from there to the desktop or apps they're trying to use. There are two type of Remote Desktop Service CAL: Per User CAL & Per Device CAL.

Per Device Per User
CALs are physically assigned to each device. CALs are assigned to a user in Active Directory.
CALs are tracked and enforced by the license server. CALs are tracked but not enforced by the license server.
CALs can be tracked regardless of Active Directory membership. CALs cannot be tracked within a workgroup.
You can revoke up to 20% of CALs. You cannot revoke any CALs.
Temporary CALs are valid for 52-89 days. Temporary CALs are not available.

What's New in Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2016:

The following features have been added to Remote Desktop as part of Windows Server 2016.

After you install the latest version of Windows Server 2016 and have had a chance to try out some of these great new features, drop by the Remote Desktop Service user voice forum to let us know what you think.

Personal session desktops

Administrators can now deploy server-based personal desktops in Windows Server 2016. With personal session desktops, each user gets an assigned RD Session Host (RDSH) VM - the admin can optionally enable administrative rights for users. See Introducing Personal Session Desktops by Clark Nicholson for more information.

Note about CAL versions

The CAL used by users or devices must correspond to the version of Windows Server that the user or device is connecting to. You can't use older CALs to access newer Windows Server versions, but you can use newer CALs to access older Windows Server versions.

The following table shows the CALs that are compatible on RD Session Hosts and RD Virtualization Hosts.

Host Server
2000 CAL 2003 CAL 2003 R2 CAL 2008 CAL 2008 R2 CAL 2012 CAL 2016 CAL
2000 license server Yes No No No No No No
2003 license server Yes Yes Yes No No No No
2008, 2008 R2 license server Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No No
2012 license server Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No
2012 R2 license server Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No
2016 license server Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

Any RDS license server can host licenses from all previous versions of Remote Desktop Services and the current version of Remote Desktop Services. For example, a Windows Server 2016 RDS license server can host licenses from all previous versions of RDS, while a Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS license server can only host licenses up to Windows Server 2012 R2.

Support for Gen 2 VMs

You can now use Gen 2 VMs (virtual machines) with Remote Desktop. You can use Gen 2 VMs as template images for pooled/personal VM collections and personal session desktop collections. There's no additional configuration required, so deploy at will.

Pen remoting support

Pen devices - like those available with Surface Pro 3 devices - are now supported for use through Remote Desktop connections. Technically, you always could use the pens, but it was treated like a mouse. Now we treat pen devices as equal to your mouse, fingertip, and keyboard. David Bélanger has a great post covering how to use pen remoting.

Edge support in RDSH

You may have heard that we released a new Web browser - Microsoft Edge. Test Edge in Remote Desktop to see how it handles your apps and meets your needs.

OpenGL applications and guest VMs in Remote Desktop

RemoteFX vGPU support in Windows Server 2016 adds support for OpenGL applications and Windows Server 2016 guest VMs. Check out the RemoteFX vGPU information in the RDS blog to get more details and step-by-step instructions on how to test this support.

Windows Multipoint Services

Multipoint services is a low-cost, single-server multi-user solution that is easy to deploy and easy to manage. Multipoint is now part of Windows Server 2016 as an optional role, instead of a separate product. When you enable the Multipoint services role, we also install RDSH.

For more details on this new feature, particularly an FAQ, see Tanmay Bhagwat's post on MultiPoint Services on the RDS blog.

Client updates

We regularly update our Remote Desktop clients - see Microsoft Remote Desktop Clients for the latest details.

But, in particular, you should check out these:

There are two types of Remote Desktop Services client access licenses:
  • RDS Per User CALs
  • RDS Per Device CALs
When Per Device licensing mode is used, and a client computer or device connects to an RD Session Host server for the first time, the client computer or device is issued a temporary license by default. When a client computer or device connects to an RD Session Host server for the second time, if the license server is activated and enough RDS Per Device CALs are available, the license server issues the client computer or device a permanent, RDS Per Device CAL.

An RDS Per User CAL gives one user the right to access an RD Session Host server from an unlimited number of client computers or devices. RDS Per User CALs are not enforced by RD Licensing. As a result, client connections can occur regardless of the number of RDS Per User CALs installed on the license server. This does not absolve administrators from Microsoft Software License Terms requirements to have a valid RDS Per User CAL for each user. Failure to have an RDS Per User CAL for each user, if Per User licensing mode is being used, is a violation of the license terms.

To ensure that you are in compliance with the license terms, make sure that you track the number of RDS Per User CALs being used in your organization and that you have a sufficient number of RDS Per User CALs installed on the license server to provide an RDS Per User CAL for each user that needs to connect to the RD Session Host server.
You can use the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager (RD Licensing Manager) tool to track and generate reports on the issuance of RDS Per User CALs. For more information, see Track the Issuance of Remote Desktop Services Per User Client Access Licenses.

Verify Licensing for the Remote Desktop Services

To verify the functionality of the deployment, use Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to connect to the remote host. The use of the license will be verified on the Remote Desktop license server.

  • Verify client connectivity:

    • To verify client connectivity in a session-based desktop deployment: Establish a client connection in a session-based desktop deployment using a valid license

    • To verify client connectivity in a virtual machine-based desktop deployment: Establish a client connection in a virtual machine-based desktop deployment using a valid license

  • Verify the RDS CAL by using Remote Desktop Licensing Manager
